Cape of Good Hope
Why it is called Cape of Good Hope
The Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias originally named it ‘Cape of Storms’ in 1488 because of numerous storms and skirmishes his crew encountered around the Cape.
John II of Portugal, while supervising his country’s trade with Guinea, renamed it the ‘Cape of Good Hope‘. He chose the name because its discovery was ‘a good omen’ that at last, India could be reached by sea from Europe.
